As a IT administrator for my clients, I have been using NETSCAN a handy little network scanner. It gives you IP, NETBIOS names etc. From its menu you can RDP, remotely reboot etc devices it finds on the network. This has been in my arsenal of useful tools for several years now.
Another network scanner that is not so well know is a product produced by MIKROTIK ROUTERS
This actually maps out the layout of your network. Most times you manually have to move the devices around to fit your layout but once done. It gives you a physical live layout of your devices which you can customize the ICONS or the background.
This I use on a stand alone PC with a large LCD screen. It shows all my connected clients. Any go down I will see that change live.
The program is setup as a installer - which you can simply extract to a folder and run directly if you don't like installing extra hardware.
Below is screen shots of how the layouts look after a scan. All the generic icons can be replaced with actual photos of the devices.
