Spiceworks Home:
I have been using this Management software since 2009. I have it setup for my home network to include all my family's sites.
I setup my Central Site (HOME) on a VM Workstation running Windows 7.
I open a single port on my firewall for remote sites to connect securely.
Each Site I setup - Spiceworks give the option of connecting to a central server, they sites are setup in remote mode. I enter my Domain/Static WAN address and port and it connects. I now receive full hardware information, software information, alerts, HDD failure, Software installation, virus alerts. I Know now if my Fathers Printer Toner is getting low, windows updates need to be installed, a virus has been detected at a site. Things that being the family tech I end up spending my Saturday fixing.
There are tons of reports you can create about hard etc on the network. Just within my home environment I manage over 245 devices (Computers, Switches, Routers, Printers, Phones...everything)
I no longer receive phone calls that a PC is not booting, I have either gotten a email prior too or can look at the alerts for it in Spiceworks and determine the cause or at the least what type of hardware I am dealing with. I get alerts on warranty expiration in case I need to replace anything and know if its still covered under warranty.

Spiceworks Business:
Same Idea with regards to setup, included in this is a customer portal where end users can create tickets regarding issues they are having, this customer portal is customizable to include your company logo. When I receive a ticket from a client, I know what hardware they are linked too, the history tied to that hardware and I can check live if the system has thrown any alerts - all within Spiceworks.
Inventory Management:
The built in reports give you full access to all inventory with full system specs. When Management or clients ask for the information its a single click to create the report which can be exported to excel or PDF. From within the program Spiceworks has integrate Remote Management, Remote Desktop and Logmein Rescue. A quick way to access the Computer in question if remote service is required.
